Commissions Reasons
for a commissioned painting
Thinking of a commissioned painting? Even
if your ideas are at the earliest stages, ring or email Jonathan
for an informal chat - there will be no commitment on your part
to progress further at this stage. Commissioning
a painting is a very personal process and the text we print here
is only intended to outline one possible route to the finished painting.
A commission can be used to mark a particular
occasion, celebration, achievement, place, person or to fulfill
a particular purpose or interest.
To ensure your specific desires are met through the commission process,
the next step is to arrange a meeting with Jonathan for you to discuss
your requirements in more detail.
Commission process
We suggest that the commission process follows five stages:
1. |
initial discussion |
2. |
preliminary
sketches |
3. |
presentation
of costed proposal |
4. |
agreement
of the final painting design, delivery date, fee and copyright
ownership |
5. |
painting executed
and delivered |
Costs
Here are the details of my prices for a commissioned watercolour painting. I offer three different
approaches to a commissioned painting. The time I spend on the commission varies between these three
approaches and hence the price.
One important factor affecting price is the agreement reached regarding use of the image for prints. In
instances where the customer is happy for me to produce prints for sale using the image, the price of the
commission is lower – however this only applies where the subject matter will work for me as a print. For
example a painting of a private residence would not normally fall into this category.
The customer may want an original painting that is exclusive to them – I am very happy to work in this way
also.
The price is also proportionate to the size of the painting.
OPTION 1
My commission prices are as follows:-

This price includes visits to meet the client through the commission process and visiting the location to
take photos - all of which can take up a couple of days of so. Commissions from outside Scotland may
incur additional travel expenses to be agreed on an individual basis.
OPTION 2
An alternative approach is to work from photographs
supplied by the client and communicate via email to develop ideas and define exactly what the client
would like. Proceeding on this basis my prices are
as follows:-

aspects of composition and colour.
This approach helps the client to get the painting that they really want.
The sketches can be sent via
email and/or scans can be posted during this process.
OPTION 3
Work from photographs supplied by the client or suggested by me. Communicate via email to develop
ideas and define exactly what the client would like.
Spend 8 hours (1 day) drawing and painting the picture to a size of around 14" x 10" or an alternative
shape that is the same area.
